Orthopedic Services

Orthopedic Services

Orthopedic rehabilitation plays a critical role after joint replacement surgery in helping residents regain strength, ability and function. However, it is just as important for residents recovering from illness, surgery or a hospital stay or in the treatment of significant arthritis or acute orthopedic conditions such as low back pain, or hip or wrist fractures.

Program Overview

Our expert and dedicated interdisciplinary rehab teams are educated and trained on the latest technology, surgical approaches, protocols and precautions. They develop, follow and modify a rehabilitation plan that is unique to each resident’s needs, goals and progress toward the goal of functional independence.
  • Medical Management – Our physical and occupational clinicians and speech-language pathologists complete an initial evaluation and develop an individualized rehabilitation plan in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team that will guide the resident through his/her recovery process. Our therapists work closely with the entire medical team including the orthopedic surgeon, the attending physician and nursing with the common goal of recovery and independence.
  • Pain Management – Most residents undergoing orthopedic rehabilitation understandably experience pain during their recovery and benefit from our pain management program. During this time, the physician and nursing work together to manage the resident’s pain with medication given prior to therapy sessions to enable the residents to participate to the fullest extent. Therapy can also help manage pain symptoms through other approaches including:
    • acupressure
    • the use of electrical stimulation
    • manual therapy techniques
    • joint range of motion and strengthening exercises
    • functional mobility
    • the use of heat and cold on affected areas
  • Education – Our clinicians educate and train residents, families and caregivers about the resident’s specific condition and its management to ensure an understanding of the need to comply with postoperative care including positioning, medication, precautions and treatments to enhance functional mobility, ambulation, self-care management, adaptive equipment and exercises.
  • Physical Conditioning – This includes exercises, therapeutic activities and gait training to increase muscle strength and stability, joint range of motion and the mobility that has been compromised by the resident’s orthopedic condition.
  • Discharge Preparations – In order to ease each resident’s transition from facility to home, and create an environment that promotes safety and healing, we offer:
    • An individualized home exercise program to further increase the gains the resident has made in therapy
    • Education on home safety to reduce any fall hazards in the home and when to notify the physician about possible blood clots or joint replacement infection as well as prevention of infection
    • Recommendations for home equipment needs
    • Instructions and training for shower and car transfers
    • Recommendations for follow-up care either in the home or as an outpatient as well as other services that may be required
Working Together – Making a Difference
The benefit of this program is the individualized care and team approach, with all members focusing on their area of clinical expertise. By working together, they can develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care that addresses the entire resident’s unique needs, resulting in optimal resident outcomes. We pride ourselves on our clinicians’ expertise and understanding of the most appropriate and effective rehabilitative strategies supported by current research that enable our residents to regain function, strength and ability to achieve the independence to safely return home. Our rehabilitation teams coordinate the correct mix of physical and occupational therapies and speech/language pathology, along with physician and nursing care to meet each individual resident’s needs and provide recovery.

We work to develop goals with input from each resident to help achieve the greatest possible success.
